My clients already had multi-colored outdoor dinnerwear that I neededd to coordinate with my poolside designs.  Shades of turquoise and aqua are the perfect color palette  for pools.  I love the cool aqua pool with aqua umbrellas, chair cushions and placemats.

Fabulous chevron patterned pillows were just the right about of  energy for three small tables. I only used two chevron pillows at each table. Four would have been too busy.  I used a pair of solid pillows at each table–red, yellow and turquoise.

Neutral colors were used in the covered porch so that in the winter or Christmas my client could add pillows, candles and flowers to fit the season.  We added a fire pit for a cool winter night.  Rosemary spiral topiaries in bronze urns and an aged copper wall planter create a focal point. The dark taupe and crream damask patterned  outdoor rug provides a place to dry off after a dip in the pool.

Without the new drainage system added to the deck floor my clients could not have used the covered porch in the rain.  We also added steps for  convenience and safety.  The upper deck is used for grilling due to its close proximity to the kitchen.

I continued the neutral color to the upstairs deck. My client enjoys using candles, placemats and dishes from her home’s color palette or a seasonal color when eating al fresco.

Tips to Create an Outdoor Living Space

Many of my readers know that I appear monthly on my local Fox TV station, WGHP FOX 8.  My topic this week  “Creating an Outdoor Living Space” was about one of my favorite spaces to design . Can you believe that the business of creating outdoor spaces and products is over a $60 million a year business?  Most every big chain store has products that can be used outdoors.  The main difference is that products will last for many years while some will only last one to three summers.  If you prefer to not use the same color or style for what seems like forever, then go with the less expensive products.  My Woodard outdoor furniture with Sunbrella striped fabric cushions is nineteen years old and still in great shape!  For several years my Sunbrella fabric throw pillows served me well until this year when I tired of them and decided to replace them with solid yellow and rustl floral pillows and cushion from Pier One Imports.  These new pillows will not last as long, maybe three years, as the Sunbrella but I knew that when I purchased them.
