Timothy Corrigan, Interior Designer

During the Fall 2014 Furniture Market I had the pleasure of meeting Timothy Corrigan, who is one of the world’s most respected interior designers.  He has been named to the Architectural Digest  Top 100 Interior Designers and Architects in the World  for 8 years and Robb’s Report awarded him the title of Top 40 Interior Designers in the World. Get the idea?  His list of accomplishments and influence in the world of interior design goes on and on.

Elle Decor states: “Timothy Corrigan creates comfortable spaces suffused with old-world elegance”.  No matter how beautifully a space is designed, it is not entirely successful unless it is also comfortable, practical and liveable. Mixing elements that are new and old and from all around the world, our work is classic but with a fresh, comfortable feeling. www/timothy-corrigan.com

After working on a design site for two weeks and  walking at the Furniture Market for 4 days my feet were screaming “no more walking!” I had marked “Comfortable Elegance  Tips for Creating Beautiful and Welcoming Spaces” by Timothy Corrigan as the number one seminar I wanted to attend during the furniture market.   Rather than walk around for another hour or go home, I decided to just put my feet up and read my emails while I waited for the seminar.  As soon as I walked into the seminar room Timothy walked up and introduced himself and invited me to come sit with him and his assistant, Elaine Maltzman.   I had an  amazing time  that I will  never forget.  Timothy has a contagious positive energy and love for interior design, his design projects and his clients.

The term “Comfortable Elegance” which has been trademarked by Timothy,is my favorite design philosophy!  No matter what your design style you can create a home that is comfortable and elegant.  I love, love this comfortable and inviting kitchen/dining room/ sunroom.  Can you imagine entertaining  your family and friends in this happy house?  My design business for several years was “Casual Elegance by Cheryl”. After years of people asking me if I was an image consultant, jewelry or clothing designer or owned a store, I changed my business name to Cheryl Hucks Interior Designs.  Now, everyone knows exactly what I do and my name!

One of my favorite ways to add height, elegance and importance to a bed is a bed crown or corona.

A common question client’s ask is ” how far above bathroom faucets to hang mirrors?”   Here’s the answer!  If your mirror is tall  and does not have a frame that projects out so far that it hits the faucet, hang it low. If your bathroom vanity mirror is hung too high or too low, you will know immediately….you will have uneasy feeling that something is not quite right.  I also like that Timothy used a silver tray (that would probably  be stored in a china cabinet)  to organize the counter top and create an elegance.

In 2003 Corrigan purchased a 45,000 square foot  neoclassical chateau in in Loire Valley, France and transformed it into an exquisite, livable home.  “An Invitation to Chateau du Grand-Luce , Decorating a Great French Country House” details the transformation with beautiful before and after photos. Century Furniture hosted a book signing during the  2014 Fall High Point Furniture Market. where I purchased the coffee table book.  I  have enjoying reading the book and seeing the chateau’s transformation through Timothy’s words and eyes.

“2015 Home Decor Trends” Part 1-Color

Hello Everyone! Cheryl Hucks, your DESIGN INTERPRETER, is back from helping decorate my future twin grandchildren’s nursery.   We do not know whether there will two adorable girls or boys or one of each but the suspense will be over in December!  Once we know the sexes, we will add the their names above their cribs and other finishing touches. We framed and matted colorful artwork by the twin’s 10 and 12 yr old  brothers to create a beautiful art wall. I am so excited to welcome my 5th and 6th grandchildren!!

Are you ready to update your home with the  2015  Home Decor Trends”?  Rather than list all the trends in one long blog, I have decided to write a series based on several of the new trends for 2015.  Today’s blog is about “color” which is probably the number one requested trend for any new year. After the Spring High Point Furniture Market I wrote that one of seminars I attended said blue would be one of the hottest color for 2015.  There are many organizations and individuals who give an “educated guess” as to what the new color or group of  colors will be for the following year. Sometimes they all agree but sometimes not.  Pantone  releases their “Color for 2015” in December.  Furniture and accessory  manufacturers must make those “educated guesses” earlier or their products would not be in the stores  or on websites by 2015. Most major paint companies have already made their predictions for 2015.  Benjamin Moore is the only one that has a 2015 Color of the Year.  Sherwin Williams and  Behr have “color palettes”.

Country Living Magazine-Benjamin Moore’s “Guilford Green” HC-116

“Benjamin Moore has made its big announcement: The company’s 2015 Color of the Year is Guilford Green (HC-116), which creative director Ellen O’Neill calls “a neutral that’s natural.” The silvery shade of green is the centerpiece of Benjamin Moore’s color trend story for 2015, a palette of 23 shades of green, blue, blush and berry designed to mixed and matched.   We chose Guilford Green as our 2015 Color of the Year because it can be the hero or the highlight in any room, enhancing the architectural identity of a space,” O’Neill said in a press release. “Guilford Green is the perfect thread to connect nature, spaces, and interiors with color schemes that signify fresh energy and growth.”

Back in the 90s I used a similar shade of green by Benjamin Moore for several projects.  Every color in my color scheme looked fabulous with the silvery green.  Why? Because the most predominant colors in nature –green, turquoise, blue and yellow- compliment the less occurring colors.

Small Spaces with Candice Olson furniture

Hi Everyone!  Your DESIGNER INTERPRETER, Cheryl Hucks, is back from the High Point Furniture Market and from working on a fun, exciting design project.  I cannot wait to show you pics of my design adventure!

While at the High Point Furniture Market I saw so many beautiful showrooms!! When visiting the market I take photos that help me interpret why designers use certain metals, furniture and accessories.

You  probably already know the new metal finish goes by the name  soft gold  or brushed gold or antique brass.  It is everyone –even in fashion.  You may have recently purchased  a new necklace with a gold metallic finish or a dress or handbag that is embellished with gold metal.   When Brushed nickel was first introduced as the latest and greatest metal finish, I still used my gold and brass. Shiny brass was popular in the 8Os and it now creeping back into home furnishings. Do not freak out–brushed nickel and polished nickel are still popular. As well as, oiled bronze.

Candice Olson, Highland House Furniture

Candice Olson’s Highland House Furniture console has an antique brass nail head trim that is ageless! It is paired with a more sleek no fuss shape and the latest neutral, gray.  The dark wooden top adds the perfect amount of warmth.  Enough about the console table. Let’s talk about the fabulous accessories!  What is your favorite?  The large round “soft gold” trimmed mirror or the pair of candlestick lamps?  I cannot decide!  I will take all three!  To complete the symmetry a pair of mini ottomans were added under the table.  Here you have a perfect example of a Small Space with Big  Design! Wouldn’t this be magnificent on that small wall in the corner that you cannot decide what furniture to use?  Maybe in a foyer or niche.  Do you have the perfect location for this Candice Olson console table? http://www.candiceolson.com/

Twist on Blue and White Decor

After the Spring High Point Furniture Market this past April, I blogged that one of the newest color trends for 2015 was blue….royal, cobalt, baby, French, navy are just few beautiful shades that will freshen up your home decor!  The combination of blue and white is classic and historical  that dates back for centuries.  Blue and White is a passion for many!

Farmhouse Paint-no wax paint!

Do you love Shabby Chic? Are you a DIY type of person? I have not tried Farmhouse Paint, but if the paint really needs no prep, wax or topcoat, count me in!! I have used other chalk paints that require minimal prep but lots of waxing…the part that I admit is not fun.  Miitzi Beach, a Stylespotters at the Spring High Point Furniture Market 2014 , posted Farmhouse Paint, as one of new styles. It sounds like something my design clients and blog readers would love!

Bunny Williams by Century Furniture

At the High point Spring Furniture 2014 I fell in love with this beautiful Bunny Williams outdoor dining table by Century Furniture. The teak pedestal base and aluminum 56″ square top make it perfect for  large or small dining.  In this photo two of the tables have been pushed together so that at least 6 or 8 people could comfortably dine.  If your space is large enough, you could use several for a huge dinner party.  Need more intimate dining or perhaps an outdoor bridge or card party, separate the tables.

More Home Decor Trends 2015

Earlier this week I blogged about two of the latest trends for 2015:  Chinoiserie, Chinese influenced designs, and Shagreen, shark and stingray skin covered furniture and accessories.  In addition to walking through many showrooms at the High Point Furniture Market, I attended three expert Trend Forecaster’s seminars.  Many of the trends were on all the three experts lists but several were only on one expert’s  list.  Here are a few photos of trends that most homeowners may actually use in their own home decor.

What is this new trend, Shagreen?

What is Shagreen, a new trend in home decor? It is shark or stingray skin! With the concern of harming animals many manufacturers are reproducing this small circular patterned skin on a rubber type surface and covering cocktail  and end tables, desks,  trays and other accessories. Faux skins which are available in most any color, can be just as beautiful as the real shagreen. While researching faux shagreen products, I found I wide range of prices   Faux snakeskin and alligator have been popular for may years and will still be seen in many home decor products and men’s and women’s clothing. Bet we will see shagreen purses, belt, shoes and jewelry.

New Home Decor Trends-Fox 8

I thoroughly enjoy my monthly appearances on my local Fox 8 WGHP in High Point, NC.  Cindy Farmer  and rest of the  news  staff  and all the Fox  8 employees are very friendly and make me feel very welcome and relaxed.  Speaking of Fox 8, I cannot wait for “24” and Jack Bauer to be back on Fox starting May 4th!  One of my all time favorite TV show!   Okay, back to home decor trends.

A few of the new trends are available in your local stores now and as the year progresses will be more exciting products to update your home for 2015.  If you already have a few of these items or colors in your home from years of  past decorating, bring them back out of storage.  Yesterday, I discussed Chinoiserie  or Chinese Decor which is an example of a style that has been around for centuries and  is making a strong comeback.

Large patterned florals (pillow), sapphire blue (vase), copper (photo frame), bone and horn (napkin rings), warm greens (pillow), pastels ( pink towel and sheer curtain), Chinoiserie (pagoda shaped lantern), sheer curtains (blue patterned sheers) and  shagreen or hides (faux crocodile tray) are the examples I discussed this morning on Fox 8 with Cindy Farmer.
