Happy Easter!

Cheryl Hucks Interior Designs

Cheryl Hucks Interior Designs

Happy Easter to your house from mine!  I love decorating my dining table for Easter.  Many of my decorations on this table and in other areas in my home are gifts from  mother, grandmother and friends.  Two bunnies and chicks were my mother’s and my grandmother’s. I bought the beautiful egg plates at Pier One.  Love their Easter and Spring decor.

When my two and half year old granddaughter, Payton, helped me Easter decorate a few weeks ago, I gave her a few Easter decorations so that she can pass them down to her children. Dyeing Easter eggs and adding stickers was a fun grandmother and granddaughter  afternoon.  Her excitement  for  each egg she found during the egg hunt was contagious!

This year I purchased silk flowers for the  ceramic Easter planter. The wooden eggs on the right are place card holders.

Hope you have a great Easter with your family and friends!

Fun Nurseries-Fox 8

I hope you caught my appearance on Fox 8 WGHP last Friday. My topic was “Fun Nurseries”.  I brought lots of fun  nursery accessories purchased at Babies R Us. www.myFox8.com  www.babiesrus.com

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 with Cindy Farmer

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 with Cindy Farmer

I wanted to show the viewers how gender neutral nurseries can still be fun. I chose  Yellow and Gray and Aqua and  Pear Green.

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 WGHP

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 WGHP

Before sonograms could tell you the sex of your baby, parents-to-be painted their nurseries yellow or green and used the Winnie the Pooh characters.  The yellow gender neutral nursery has been updated by using today’s new neutral, gray. Sheets with gray background and yellow -white modern patterns.  Stars are  prominent in the lamp, wall paper border and the Sweet Dreams wall art.  Felt covered hangers have made their way in nurseries.  They are no only for adults now!  Isn’t the yellow giraffe adorable!  Babies love the petite blankets with animal heads.  Happy Hippo!

Cheryl Hucks at Fox 8 WGHP

Cheryl Hucks at Fox 8 WGHP

Want more color for your little boy or girl?  Aqua and pear green are still neutral but with more color.  Bedding, wall plaques, and adorable mobiles will catch your little ones eyes and keep them entertained for a short time…while you do the laundry and dishes.

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 WGHP

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 WGHP

Lamps with eye catching animals and patterned lampshades are an affordable addition to your nursery.  The portable diaper changing storage has places for diapers, lotions, wipes and a change of clothes.  Tucked into a pouch is a matching diaper changing mat.  Must have if you live in a two story house with the nursery on the top floor and the kitchen and living on the first floor.  Stuffed animals are another way to coordinate the color and theme of your nursery.

I used Raggedy Ann and Andy for nursery  colors and theme.  Pale blue walls, blue and white checked drapes, white furniture and of course, several Ann’s and Andy’s.  My accent color was red from the red yarn hair on the dolls.  At the time it was the perfect nursery theme for both a boy and a girl. I know it is difficult to resist knowing the sex of your newborn, but it can be fun decorating for the unknown.  Another reason to not have a gender specific nursery  is if you plan to have your children close together in age.  You could make any of my two examples more for feminine or masculine by adding a few accessories or color that are associated with the sex of your newborn.

Pantone 2016 Color Trends for Interiors

Heads up for all of you who like to be ahead of the latest colors for your home.

Pantone reveals 2016 color trends for interiors

Pantone View Home + Interiors includes nine color palettes

Pantone View Home + Interiors 2016Pantone Color Institute unveiled its annual trend forecast for interiors during this week’s International Home & Housewares Show.

Pantone View Home + Interiors 2016 – Innovation and Impact includes nine key palettes, plus individual color and material direction, for home furnishings and interior design in 2016.

“As media continue to move toward more evocative, imaginative and innovative uses of color to woo consumers, unexpected color stories are emerging,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “To capture attention and keep product lines relevant in the consumer’s eye, it’s important to understand the impact that this always-morphing innovation will have on color and design trends for 2016.”

Pantone View Home + Interiors 2016 contains visual inspiration, suggested color harmonies, individual tear-out palette cards for each of the nine forecasted palettes, swatches of the 77 forecasted colors and product imagery for use in presentations and storyboards. A summary page provides a comprehensive color overview and a look at other factors influencing the world of home furnishings and interior environments. To enable digital design, Pantone View Home + Interiors 2016 also includes Pantone Color Manager for direct download of all Pantone Color Libraries into design software.

The nine palettes for 2016 are:

Unambiguous colors, including shades that are plumbed from natural sources such as warm rosy clay and sheepskin beige, give us Natural Forms.

Dichotomy reinforces the concept that opposites do and can attract as silver metallic, sunny yellow and bright cobalt blue combine with calmer versions of the hues.

Pastel-focused Ephemera blends delicate shades of wan blue, pale peach and tender yellow.

Lineage is a palette where shades of navy, black, tan and regimental green co-mingle with touches of brighter colors.

Soft Focus reveals subtle and/or muted colors, sometimes being described as “smoky” and always versatile.

In the French language, Bijoux means “jewelry” – a fitting title for this palette that gleams with drama and intensity across many jewel tones.

Merriment is full of joyful shades including vibrant greens and yellows contrasted with pinks and oranges.

Capricious color combinations with vacation-destination blues and blue-greens createFootloose – a palette that supports the idea of throwing off the constricting scheduling of everyday life and simply enjoying the freedom of the outdoors.

Mixed Bag is an assortment of eclectic patterns and prints, with exciting and unique colors like pirate black and mandarin red as well as violet and florid orange.

Masculine Home Tips

I am always on the prowl for masculine furniture and accessories that are not the typical “man cave” style: huge black sofas or sectionals, enormous black flat screen TVs,bear skin rugs and car or sports posters. Most of my single men design clients want comfort, style and quality.

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

I create rooms for my clients that look like they have been acquired over time. When everything matches a room lacks character and can be boring.  Even if you spend a ton of money, it can look less expensive.  Mixing styles and elements from different design eras gives your room a sense of quality and the feeling that each piece was carefully selected for your individual design taste. This design theory is also true for mascline design.

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

Recently, I very  excited when one of my single male clients wanted to include his grandfather’s cigar table in his family room design. It adds character and makes his room feel more comfortable.  Inherited pieces of furniture, accessories and art are also what designers call a “conversation piece”.  Pieces that are worn and weathered  and still being used show that they are  well made. If you do not have inherited pieces, flea markets and consignments shops are great places to acquire a few antiques or vintage pieces

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

Adding several textures will make a room feel more masculine. The all time favorite for most men is leather, leather, leather!!!  Wooden tables that are  heavy enough add another element of warmth.  Men also like metal and iron….tables with metal or iron legs give that industrial chic look.  Something a man could kick back and rest his feet on. I have not yet found a man who did not like the idea of an upholstered ottoman with storage. Products that will last are important to men.

Williams Sonoma

Straight lines are more masculine  than curved lines. Not only in furniture but in lamps, artwork, lighting and fabrics.  Men prefer simple, uncluttered design.  If they live alone, dusting accessories and  needing to move accessories to dust is not on their “to do list”.

Williams Sonoma

Almost all men love neutral colors–black, gray, tan, taupe, brown, cream, white, navy, and gold. Men love blue!  Almost any shade of blue.  I include my favorite, turquoise.   Add pops of color with accessories, rugs, artwork and if they will agree, throw pillows. Earth and  jewel tones will make a make an all neutral room more inviting, and interesting.

Here is my list of more masculine elements :1- hardwood and tile floors, 2- blinds, shades or plain window panels  for window coverings, 3- stainless steel kitchen appliances, 4-electronically controlled gas logs, ceiling fans, window shades 5-Black and white prints and black or dark wood frames,6-green design ( good for the environment), 7- repurpose furniture, accessories

Timothy Corrigan, Interior Designer

During the Fall 2014 Furniture Market I had the pleasure of meeting Timothy Corrigan, who is one of the world’s most respected interior designers.  He has been named to the Architectural Digest  Top 100 Interior Designers and Architects in the World  for 8 years and Robb’s Report awarded him the title of Top 40 Interior Designers in the World. Get the idea?  His list of accomplishments and influence in the world of interior design goes on and on.

Timothy Corrigan Website

www.timothy-corrigan.com

Elle Decor states: “Timothy Corrigan creates comfortable spaces suffused with old-world elegance”.  No matter how beautifully a space is designed, it is not entirely successful unless it is also comfortable, practical and liveable. Mixing elements that are new and old and from all around the world, our work is classic but with a fresh, comfortable feeling. www/timothy-corrigan.com

After working on a design site for two weeks and  walking at the Furniture Market for 4 days my feet were screaming “no more walking!” I had marked “Comfortable Elegance  Tips for Creating Beautiful and Welcoming Spaces” by Timothy Corrigan as the number one seminar I wanted to attend during the furniture market.   Rather than walk around for another hour or go home, I decided to just put my feet up and read my emails while I waited for the seminar.  As soon as I walked into the seminar room Timothy walked up and introduced himself and invited me to come sit with him and his assistant, Elaine Maltzman.   I had an  amazing time  that I will  never forget.  Timothy has a contagious positive energy and love for interior design, his design projects and his clients.

The term “Comfortable Elegance” which has been trademarked by Timothy,is my favorite design philosophy!  No matter what your design style you can create a home that is comfortable and elegant.  I love, love this comfortable and inviting kitchen/dining room/ sunroom.  Can you imagine entertaining  your family and friends in this happy house?  My design business for several years was “Casual Elegance by Cheryl”. After years of people asking me if I was an image consultant, jewelry or clothing designer or owned a store, I changed my business name to Cheryl Hucks Interior Designs.  Now, everyone knows exactly what I do and my name!

A common question client’s ask is ” how far above bathroom faucets to hang mirrors?”   Here’s the answer!  If your mirror is tall  and does not have a frame that projects out so far that it hits the faucet, hang it low. If your bathroom vanity mirror is hung too high or too low, you will know immediately….you will have uneasy feeling that something is not quite right.  I also like that Timothy used a silver tray (that would probably  be stored in a china cabinet)  to organize the counter top and create an elegance.

In 2003 Corrigan purchased a 45,000 square foot  neoclassical chateau in in Loire Valley, France and transformed it into an exquisite, livable home.  “An Invitation to Chateau du Grand-Luce , Decorating a Great French Country House” details the transformation with beautiful before and after photos. Century Furniture hosted a book signing during the  2014 Fall High Point Furniture Market. where I purchased the coffee table book.  I  have enjoying reading the book and seeing the chateau’s transformation through Timothy’s words and eyes.

Blackout Lining for Better Sleep

Cheryl Hucks, your DESIGN INTERPRETER with a couple of  questions: Are you getting a good night’s sleep?  Do you wake up several times a night?  Blackout Lining can be the answer to a more restful sleep.  Scientific studies have proven that too much light and certain color lights in your bedroom can effect your sleep.  I recommend to all my design clients to purchase ready made  or custom made drapery panels, roman shades, and roller shades with blackout lining. I think you can never make a bedroom too dark!  I cover all lights from DVRs, TVs, clocks, smoke detectors, computers, printers, phones, etc with black electrical tape.  I carry it with me when I travel. If I cannot cover the light with tape, I cover it with a black bath cloth.  Call me crazy, but I sleep all night without waking one time!  Your bedroom will be dark enough that bright sunshine will not wake you! I especially like blackout lining in nurseries and kids rooms.  When my grandchildren spend the night with me, they sleep later and usually say they have a better night’s sleep.  Rooms where you watch TV it can be a must.

Bed, Bath and Beyond

Drapery panels can be purchased at most any store that sells bedding, pillows and draperies.  These charcoal  grommet panels are contemporary and sleek.

Did you think the drapery fabric had to dark? No way!  It is the blackout lining that makes it dark..not the outside drapery fabric color.

I had these gorgeous silk draperies with blackout lining made for clients whose bedroom windows faced  the morning sun  with it  reflecting on lake water.  You can see the lake out the window.  The traverse rod was mounted next to the crown molding.  Otherwise, the sunlight could have escaped out the top of the windows.

Cheryl Hucks Interior Designs

The only light that escapes is on the floor.   Beautiful custom made blackout lined draperies!  My client’s love their dark bedroom to get a great night’s sleep!

Another way to not allow the light to escape the top of the windows is to hang valances above the panels.  This panel was hung as close to the ceiling as possible.  The valance was stapled onto a 2 x4  piece of wood.  The drapery panels have blackout lining.

What if you already have window treatments you love and have invested a lot money?  You can purchase or have blackout liners made that can be hung on a separate rod behind your existing drapes.

If you want to make your own blackout lined draperies, here is a link that shows you step by step.

http://www.somuchbetterwithage.com/2013/06/diy-curtains-with-blackout-lining/

Reasons why you should have blackout lining:

http://www.dunelm-mill.com/info/what-is-blackout-lining

With a wealth of qualities to improve your sleep, treating your bedroom to an elegant pair of blackout curtains or investing in a smart blackout blind could have a big impact when it comes to getting
your forty winks.

We tend to associate sleeping comfort with temperature, support and softness, but blackout products bring something unique to the table. Their key purpose is to provide an efficient and effective barrier to stop external light sources from disturbing your sleep, plus a range of other benefits.

Blackout products are naturally best suited for use in the bedroom where being able to control light and temperature levels is imperative for quality of sleep, but blackout fabrics are also great for the living room if street lights or vehicle headlamps persistently shine through your window.

Beyond blackout: what else do they offer?

Light control is the headline story when it comes to blackout, but what else can they do to create a sanctuary of sleep? The special coatings and linings of blackout collection have a triple benefit system, of which the light exclusion that gives them their name is just the first.

Temperature control & thermal insulation
Blackout products also have the ability to regulate room temperature thanks to the added thermal insulation they offer. Thermal insulation is something we usually associate with keeping warm, and while blackout does offer an effective defence to keep chills out and warmth in when the temperature drops, it also keeps your home from suffering the effects of sweltering summer sun.

Far from a seasonal addition to your home, the special layer of lining or coating used to create blackout curtains and blackout blinds helps to keep your room cool on hot days, making them a handy ally to escape the summer heat. Draw your blackout curtains or lower your blackout roller blind during the day and the coating will create a barrier to the sun’s rays to keep your room cool.

Noise reduction
If you’ve ever been kept awake by irritating little noises from the street below that pull you back from the edge of blissful sleep, you’ll appreciate the noise reduction abilities of our blackout drapes.

The extra thick lining of our readymade blackout curtains helps to dampen noises, contributing further to the peaceful sanctuary you need when you are drifting off to sleep.

…and they’re ideal for children’s bedrooms
Most of our children’s curtains come with a blackout lining because it’s so important for your little ones to get the sleep they need. Babies and children need more rest than adults because their bodies and minds are still developing.

Our blackout curtains are perfect for creating the ideal sleep environment for your kids, as well as avoiding those ‘but it’s still light outside’ arguments at bedtime in the summer months.

If you need a better night’s sleep or want to eliminate cold, heat or noise, blackout lining is the perfect solution. It will not cost you a  lot and it will be well worth the investment!

How to paint angled walls

Hi Everyone! Cheryl Hucks, your DESIGN INTERPRETER, here!  One of the most frequent mistakes contractors, painters and homeowners make is painting a sloped  or angled wall the same color as the ceiling! These walls are usually found in attics and in rooms over a garage.   It is the wall that has an angle, not the ceiling!  Buy painting the angled or sloped part of the wall the same as the ceiling, which is usualy white, you have made the room feel shorter and smaller.  The darker the wall color, the greater the contrast,  the more the room feels short and small.  Frequently, the flat ceiling in a bonus room over a garage is only a few feet wide,  If that is the case, I usually suggest painting all walls and ceiling the same color.

Staton Homes Builders Chapel Hill NC

Staton Homes Builders Chapel Hill NC

If the angled part of the wall had been painted the same gray as the walls, the angles would have not been noticeable. Instead, your eyes are drawn to the three white angled walls!

Cheryl Hucks Interior Designs

Cheryl Hucks Interior Designs

You can hardly  see the angled corner behind the dressing table.  If the sloped part of the walls were painted white, the wall would have short and the center of attention.

Cheryl Hucks Interior Designs

Cheryl Hucks Interior Designs

When I designed this bedroom over a garage for my client’s daughter, I had the painters to paint all the walls (sloped and flat and ceiling)  a soft pink.  This made the room appear extremely tall and expansive.

Next time you paint angled walls in your home or hire a painter (who will probably disagree with you)  please insist on painting the angled or sloped walls the same as the flat walls, not the ceiling. Happy painting!

Cheryl
