Fun Nurseries-Fox 8

I hope you caught my appearance on Fox 8 WGHP last Friday. My topic was “Fun Nurseries”.  I brought lots of fun  nursery accessories purchased at Babies R Us. www.myFox8.com  www.babiesrus.com

I wanted to show the viewers how gender neutral nurseries can still be fun. I chose  Yellow and Gray and Aqua and  Pear Green.

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 WGHP

Before sonograms could tell you the sex of your baby, parents-to-be painted their nurseries yellow or green and used the Winnie the Pooh characters.  The yellow gender neutral nursery has been updated by using today’s new neutral, gray. Sheets with gray background and yellow -white modern patterns.  Stars are  prominent in the lamp, wall paper border and the Sweet Dreams wall art.  Felt covered hangers have made their way in nurseries.  They are no only for adults now!  Isn’t the yellow giraffe adorable!  Babies love the petite blankets with animal heads.  Happy Hippo!

Cheryl Hucks at Fox 8 WGHP

Want more color for your little boy or girl?  Aqua and pear green are still neutral but with more color.  Bedding, wall plaques, and adorable mobiles will catch your little ones eyes and keep them entertained for a short time…while you do the laundry and dishes.

Lamps with eye catching animals and patterned lampshades are an affordable addition to your nursery.  The portable diaper changing storage has places for diapers, lotions, wipes and a change of clothes.  Tucked into a pouch is a matching diaper changing mat.  Must have if you live in a two story house with the nursery on the top floor and the kitchen and living on the first floor.  Stuffed animals are another way to coordinate the color and theme of your nursery.

I used Raggedy Ann and Andy for nursery  colors and theme.  Pale blue walls, blue and white checked drapes, white furniture and of course, several Ann’s and Andy’s.  My accent color was red from the red yarn hair on the dolls.  At the time it was the perfect nursery theme for both a boy and a girl. I know it is difficult to resist knowing the sex of your newborn, but it can be fun decorating for the unknown.  Another reason to not have a gender specific nursery  is if you plan to have your children close together in age.  You could make any of my two examples more for feminine or masculine by adding a few accessories or color that are associated with the sex of your newborn.

Guess who I met at Fox 8?  The ACC mascots!  They were there to announce the men’s and women’s ACC tournaments in Greensboro, NC.

Masculine Home Tips

I am always on the prowl for masculine furniture and accessories that are not the typical “man cave” style: huge black sofas or sectionals, enormous black flat screen TVs,bear skin rugs and car or sports posters. Most of my single men design clients want comfort, style and quality.

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

I create rooms for my clients that look like they have been acquired over time. When everything matches a room lacks character and can be boring.  Even if you spend a ton of money, it can look less expensive.  Mixing styles and elements from different design eras gives your room a sense of quality and the feeling that each piece was carefully selected for your individual design taste. This design theory is also true for mascline design.

Williams Sonoma

Recently, I very  excited when one of my single male clients wanted to include his grandfather’s cigar table in his family room design. It adds character and makes his room feel more comfortable.  Inherited pieces of furniture, accessories and art are also what designers call a “conversation piece”.  Pieces that are worn and weathered  and still being used show that they are  well made. If you do not have inherited pieces, flea markets and consignments shops are great places to acquire a few antiques or vintage pieces

Williams Sonoma

Adding several textures will make a room feel more masculine. The all time favorite for most men is leather, leather, leather!!!  Wooden tables that are  heavy enough add another element of warmth.  Men also like metal and iron….tables with metal or iron legs give that industrial chic look.  Something a man could kick back and rest his feet on. I have not yet found a man who did not like the idea of an upholstered ottoman with storage. Products that will last are important to men.

Straight lines are more masculine  than curved lines. Not only in furniture but in lamps, artwork, lighting and fabrics.  Men prefer simple, uncluttered design.  If they live alone, dusting accessories and  needing to move accessories to dust is not on their “to do list”.

Almost all men love neutral colors–black, gray, tan, taupe, brown, cream, white, navy, and gold. Men love blue!  Almost any shade of blue.  I include my favorite, turquoise.   Add pops of color with accessories, rugs, artwork and if they will agree, throw pillows. Earth and  jewel tones will make a make an all neutral room more inviting, and interesting.

Here is my list of more masculine elements :1- hardwood and tile floors, 2- blinds, shades or plain window panels  for window coverings, 3- stainless steel kitchen appliances, 4-electronically controlled gas logs, ceiling fans, window shades 5-Black and white prints and black or dark wood frames,6-green design ( good for the environment), 7- repurpose furniture, accessories

It has fabulous accessories, furniture and more for masculine tastes.  Below in their own words is the creators of TRNK. “We’re Tariq & Nick, two design enthusiasts who want to redefine how men think about and shop for the home. We created TRNK as a destination for masculine design, and to celebrate evolved notions of male domesticity.” https://www.trnk-nyc.com/shop/

“2015 Home Decor Trends” Part 1-Color

Hello Everyone! Cheryl Hucks, your DESIGN INTERPRETER, is back from helping decorate my future twin grandchildren’s nursery.   We do not know whether there will two adorable girls or boys or one of each but the suspense will be over in December!  Once we know the sexes, we will add the their names above their cribs and other finishing touches. We framed and matted colorful artwork by the twin’s 10 and 12 yr old  brothers to create a beautiful art wall. I am so excited to welcome my 5th and 6th grandchildren!!

Are you ready to update your home with the  2015  Home Decor Trends”?  Rather than list all the trends in one long blog, I have decided to write a series based on several of the new trends for 2015.  Today’s blog is about “color” which is probably the number one requested trend for any new year. After the Spring High Point Furniture Market I wrote that one of seminars I attended said blue would be one of the hottest color for 2015.  There are many organizations and individuals who give an “educated guess” as to what the new color or group of  colors will be for the following year. Sometimes they all agree but sometimes not.  Pantone  releases their “Color for 2015” in December.  Furniture and accessory  manufacturers must make those “educated guesses” earlier or their products would not be in the stores  or on websites by 2015. Most major paint companies have already made their predictions for 2015.  Benjamin Moore is the only one that has a 2015 Color of the Year.  Sherwin Williams and  Behr have “color palettes”.

Country Living Magazine-Benjamin Moore’s “Guilford Green” HC-116

“Benjamin Moore has made its big announcement: The company’s 2015 Color of the Year is Guilford Green (HC-116), which creative director Ellen O’Neill calls “a neutral that’s natural.” The silvery shade of green is the centerpiece of Benjamin Moore’s color trend story for 2015, a palette of 23 shades of green, blue, blush and berry designed to mixed and matched.   We chose Guilford Green as our 2015 Color of the Year because it can be the hero or the highlight in any room, enhancing the architectural identity of a space,” O’Neill said in a press release. “Guilford Green is the perfect thread to connect nature, spaces, and interiors with color schemes that signify fresh energy and growth.”

Back in the 90s I used a similar shade of green by Benjamin Moore for several projects.  Every color in my color scheme looked fabulous with the silvery green.  Why? Because the most predominant colors in nature –green, turquoise, blue and yellow- compliment the less occurring colors.

ZGallerie’s take on Blue

Cheryl Hucks, your DESIGN INTERPRETER,here with my latest Designer Tip! When in Las Vegas ten years was the first time I discovered ZGallerie.  I immediately fell in love with their drop-dead gorgeous products and the “feast for the eyes” store!!!  It is one of the most beautifully merchandised stores I have ever seen.  It reminded me of an accessory showroom at the High Point Furniture Market. Their artfully designed dining tables pulled items from every aspect of the store to create a mesmerizing table setting!

The most prominent color for 2015 is blue!  Teal, robin’s egg, turquoise (my personal favorite), peacock blue, slate blue, Federal blue, hydgrangea, Wedgewood blue, royal blue, sapphire, blue denim, dark blue, indigo, navy and French blue are only a few shades of blue. Can you think of a color that does not look good with blue?   ZGallerie has head-turning  blue accessories, rugs, lamps and accessorie.  Treat your eyes to these pics by ZGallerie.

Twist on Blue and White Decor

After the Spring High Point Furniture Market this past April, I blogged that one of the newest color trends for 2015 was blue….royal, cobalt, baby, French, navy are just few beautiful shades that will freshen up your home decor!  The combination of blue and white is classic and historical  that dates back for centuries.  Blue and White is a passion for many!

Perfect fabric color for everyone!

Can you and your husband not agree on the perfect color for your bedroom?  Men love blue!  It is also the most popular color in decorating.  I love this aqua-blue Anna French fabric by Thibaut.  The pattern is not too fussy and the color is reminiscent of a day at the beach.  The coordinating fabrics would not overpower each other when used in the same room.  The adorable side table painted the same aqua-blue color is the perfect accent.
