Tips for a Cozy Winter Home

Hi Everyone!  Cheryl Hucks, your DESIGN INTERPRETER, with TIPS FOR A COZY WINTER HOME, my topic for Fox 8 WGHP last Friday, January 9. 2014.  Every time I appear on Fox 8, I set my DVR to tape it but guess what? It will not tape!  I wish I knew why…my DVR can have not other programs saved and it still will not record it.  Any ideas as to why?

Think Ski Lodges for a cozy winter home. You can use the same elements in your home too.

I would love to stay in a ski lodge with this warm, inviting and gorgeous room!  Might be difficult to leave this cozy place to the freezing slopes! Most of the warm colors are in the accessories and drapes. It would not be too expensive to make these  few changes to your own bedroom.  www.skimagazine.com

Blackout lined draperies will insulate your rooms from the cold outside as well as darkened your bedroom for better sleep and lower the noise level.  Designer Tip:  White or light colored draperies will be just as room darkening as dark fabric if both are lined in the same blackout lining. www.the companystore.com

Williams-Sonoma Beach Chic

Williams-Sonoma

Williams-Sonoma

Hi!  Cheryl Hucks, your DESIGN INTERPRETER, with my latest blog about WILLIAMS-SONOMA BEACH CHIC! Blue is the new color trend for 2015 and WILLIAMS-SONOMA  is using it in a big in their BEACH CHIC. This Seashore Style is where natural meets nautical in these organic, blue and white pieces that bring a breath of fresh air into a room when perched on tables and shelves.

Beautiful white ceramic shells on solid crystal stands tell everyone you “love ” the beach!  I love how WILLIAMS-SONOMA  mixed blue and white chinoiserie with updated ceramic drip.  Need height for your table scape?  Add Coral branches –white porcelain mounted on clear glass.

The 1930s Art Deco inspired table with nickel-plated base  is paired with the early 20th century industrial designed nickel pendant.  My favorite are the navy and white zebra stripe chairs,

Natural notes and sailing inspired accents anchored by a warm, natural materials create rooms that are bright, breezy and bold. Shades of blue, crisp whites, natural fibers and oceanic accents are the perfect combo for a relaxed beach chic home.

Designed for dreaming WILLIAMS-SONOMA juxtaposed sail-inspired white linens with a rustic textured bed and a richly patterned rug. The  mahogany wrapped in handwoven natural fiber bed makes a striking contrast with the highly lacquered  campaign style dresser and bedside chest with highly polished nickel hardware. The Chinese influence is evident in the Chippendale mahogany bench. Aren’t the white fretwork wall art perfect against the chocolate brown walls?

Tips to Select Patterned Area Rugs

Cheryl Hucks, your Design Interpreter here!  There are numerous reasons why you need an area rug–define an area in your room, create a focal point, add warmth to hardwood or tile floors, coordinate or create a color palette and more.  I recently had this  exquisite scrolled  area made for my family room.  Due to my son and daughter-in-law expecting triplets in December, I needed a larger and newer rug for my future little ones to crawl on and play. Exciting time for my family!!

I found this rug in the remnant area of a local carpet store, had the edges bound and glued and had a high quality rug pad cut to fit. If I had ordered the carpet it would have cost me 3 times what I paid for it.  Love a bargain!!  Most of the carpet remnants were solids. Be sure to check out the remnant rooms first. You might end up with a much better quality area rug for less money!  All my furniture is solid with a few patterned pillows, which are now being made.  My future window treatments will either be solid or have a small pattern that will not compete with  my focal point—my rug.

This bold statement rug makes a captivating focal point.  The solid fabric sofa allows the large floral rug to take center stage while the  modern  throw pillows accentuate the rug’s colors.  I love that this is considered  contemporary but still be used in a traditional setting.

The slate blue rug and wallpaper are equally soft and contemporary.  Your eyes are drawn to both the rug and the wallpaper that make a relaxing yet edgy statement.

Want to glam up for living room?  Pair solid fabric furniture with a large patterned rug.  I love this distinctive black and white chevron rug!

I am sure the  rug or art work were purchased to compliment one another.  Solid sofa and chairs paired with solid pillows and art do not compete with the spirited patterns in the room decor.  Your eyes have a chance to “rest” while looking at all the details in this sensational room.  Can you imagine how confusing and busy this room would look with patterned furniture?

Dark walls must have light floors.  Not all your furniture needs to light or white but the majority should.  If your floors are dark and you are in love with the idea of dark chocolate brown walls, add a large light colored area rug.  This highly textured rug has just enough personality created by the brown stripe.
