Rustic Interior Designs style is beautifully unrefined and cozy.  If you like to for your home to be a “getaway” from your work and the rest of the world, this could be the perfect style for you.  Mountains and lake style  are the two most places for rustic design. Many of these lodge style homes have stone fireplaces, high beamed ceilings, and use lots of wood, stone, metal and leather.

After seeing my examples and interviewing me, Cindy Farmer decided her design style is Bohemian.  Many people who are always drawn to bright colors, furniture, art or accessories that make your heart sing, then like,  Cindy,  you do not know what to call your  interior design style. Bohemian style allows you to express your personality. It is full of life, culture and items from all over the world. There is lots of bright colors, especially jewel tones with mix of different patterns. Fringe, glass beads, burlap and second hand furniture contribute to this Mix and Match style.

Modern and contemporary designs are not exactly the same  but are usually grouped into the same style. If you prefer sleek, spacious and simple designs, then you should decorate your home in Modern- Contemporary Interior Design style.  Focus is on function. No clutter, neutral colors, chrome, glass, concrete and geometric fabrics are emphasized in modern and contemporary homes.  Accessories are considered more an art piece than just an attractive item sitting on a table or shelf.  All lines whether it be furniture, rugs, accessories are straight and geometric. Many times even table wear is straight lined.  Example: square plates.

Is one these design styles the one you love or would love to have in your home?  If not, maybe yours is Traditional, Cottage, Shabby Chic, Art Decor, Country, European, English, Oriental , etc

Fun Nurseries-Fox 8

I hope you caught my appearance on Fox 8 WGHP last Friday. My topic was “Fun Nurseries”.  I brought lots of fun  nursery accessories purchased at Babies R Us. www.myFox8.com  www.babiesrus.com

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 with Cindy Farmer

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 with Cindy Farmer

I wanted to show the viewers how gender neutral nurseries can still be fun. I chose  Yellow and Gray and Aqua and  Pear Green.

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 WGHP

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 WGHP

Before sonograms could tell you the sex of your baby, parents-to-be painted their nurseries yellow or green and used the Winnie the Pooh characters.  The yellow gender neutral nursery has been updated by using today’s new neutral, gray. Sheets with gray background and yellow -white modern patterns.  Stars are  prominent in the lamp, wall paper border and the Sweet Dreams wall art.  Felt covered hangers have made their way in nurseries.  They are no only for adults now!  Isn’t the yellow giraffe adorable!  Babies love the petite blankets with animal heads.  Happy Hippo!

Cheryl Hucks at Fox 8 WGHP

Cheryl Hucks at Fox 8 WGHP

Want more color for your little boy or girl?  Aqua and pear green are still neutral but with more color.  Bedding, wall plaques, and adorable mobiles will catch your little ones eyes and keep them entertained for a short time…while you do the laundry and dishes.

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 WGHP

Cheryl Hucks on Fox 8 WGHP

Lamps with eye catching animals and patterned lampshades are an affordable addition to your nursery.  The portable diaper changing storage has places for diapers, lotions, wipes and a change of clothes.  Tucked into a pouch is a matching diaper changing mat.  Must have if you live in a two story house with the nursery on the top floor and the kitchen and living on the first floor.  Stuffed animals are another way to coordinate the color and theme of your nursery.

I used Raggedy Ann and Andy for nursery  colors and theme.  Pale blue walls, blue and white checked drapes, white furniture and of course, several Ann’s and Andy’s.  My accent color was red from the red yarn hair on the dolls.  At the time it was the perfect nursery theme for both a boy and a girl. I know it is difficult to resist knowing the sex of your newborn, but it can be fun decorating for the unknown.  Another reason to not have a gender specific nursery  is if you plan to have your children close together in age.  You could make any of my two examples more for feminine or masculine by adding a few accessories or color that are associated with the sex of your newborn.

Masculine Home Tips

I am always on the prowl for masculine furniture and accessories that are not the typical “man cave” style: huge black sofas or sectionals, enormous black flat screen TVs,bear skin rugs and car or sports posters. Most of my single men design clients want comfort, style and quality.

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

I create rooms for my clients that look like they have been acquired over time. When everything matches a room lacks character and can be boring.  Even if you spend a ton of money, it can look less expensive.  Mixing styles and elements from different design eras gives your room a sense of quality and the feeling that each piece was carefully selected for your individual design taste. This design theory is also true for mascline design.

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

Recently, I very  excited when one of my single male clients wanted to include his grandfather’s cigar table in his family room design. It adds character and makes his room feel more comfortable.  Inherited pieces of furniture, accessories and art are also what designers call a “conversation piece”.  Pieces that are worn and weathered  and still being used show that they are  well made. If you do not have inherited pieces, flea markets and consignments shops are great places to acquire a few antiques or vintage pieces

Williams Sonoma

Williams Sonoma

Adding several textures will make a room feel more masculine. The all time favorite for most men is leather, leather, leather!!!  Wooden tables that are  heavy enough add another element of warmth.  Men also like metal and iron….tables with metal or iron legs give that industrial chic look.  Something a man could kick back and rest his feet on. I have not yet found a man who did not like the idea of an upholstered ottoman with storage. Products that will last are important to men.

Straight lines are more masculine  than curved lines. Not only in furniture but in lamps, artwork, lighting and fabrics.  Men prefer simple, uncluttered design.  If they live alone, dusting accessories and  needing to move accessories to dust is not on their “to do list”.

Almost all men love neutral colors–black, gray, tan, taupe, brown, cream, white, navy, and gold. Men love blue!  Almost any shade of blue.  I include my favorite, turquoise.   Add pops of color with accessories, rugs, artwork and if they will agree, throw pillows. Earth and  jewel tones will make a make an all neutral room more inviting, and interesting.

Here is my list of more masculine elements :1- hardwood and tile floors, 2- blinds, shades or plain window panels  for window coverings, 3- stainless steel kitchen appliances, 4-electronically controlled gas logs, ceiling fans, window shades 5-Black and white prints and black or dark wood frames,6-green design ( good for the environment), 7- repurpose furniture, accessories

Timothy Corrigan, Interior Designer

During the Fall 2014 Furniture Market I had the pleasure of meeting Timothy Corrigan, who is one of the world’s most respected interior designers.  He has been named to the Architectural Digest  Top 100 Interior Designers and Architects in the World  for 8 years and Robb’s Report awarded him the title of Top 40 Interior Designers in the World. Get the idea?  His list of accomplishments and influence in the world of interior design goes on and on.

Timothy Corrigan Website

www.timothy-corrigan.com

Elle Decor states: “Timothy Corrigan creates comfortable spaces suffused with old-world elegance”.  No matter how beautifully a space is designed, it is not entirely successful unless it is also comfortable, practical and liveable. Mixing elements that are new and old and from all around the world, our work is classic but with a fresh, comfortable feeling. www/timothy-corrigan.com

After working on a design site for two weeks and  walking at the Furniture Market for 4 days my feet were screaming “no more walking!” I had marked “Comfortable Elegance  Tips for Creating Beautiful and Welcoming Spaces” by Timothy Corrigan as the number one seminar I wanted to attend during the furniture market.   Rather than walk around for another hour or go home, I decided to just put my feet up and read my emails while I waited for the seminar.  As soon as I walked into the seminar room Timothy walked up and introduced himself and invited me to come sit with him and his assistant, Elaine Maltzman.   I had an  amazing time  that I will  never forget.  Timothy has a contagious positive energy and love for interior design, his design projects and his clients.

The term “Comfortable Elegance” which has been trademarked by Timothy,is my favorite design philosophy!  No matter what your design style you can create a home that is comfortable and elegant.  I love, love this comfortable and inviting kitchen/dining room/ sunroom.  Can you imagine entertaining  your family and friends in this happy house?  My design business for several years was “Casual Elegance by Cheryl”. After years of people asking me if I was an image consultant, jewelry or clothing designer or owned a store, I changed my business name to Cheryl Hucks Interior Designs.  Now, everyone knows exactly what I do and my name!

One of my favorite ways to add height, elegance and importance to a bed is a bed crown or corona.

A common question client’s ask is ” how far above bathroom faucets to hang mirrors?”   Here’s the answer!  If your mirror is tall  and does not have a frame that projects out so far that it hits the faucet, hang it low. If your bathroom vanity mirror is hung too high or too low, you will know immediately….you will have uneasy feeling that something is not quite right.  I also like that Timothy used a silver tray (that would probably  be stored in a china cabinet)  to organize the counter top and create an elegance.

In 2003 Corrigan purchased a 45,000 square foot  neoclassical chateau in in Loire Valley, France and transformed it into an exquisite, livable home.  “An Invitation to Chateau du Grand-Luce , Decorating a Great French Country House” details the transformation with beautiful before and after photos. Century Furniture hosted a book signing during the  2014 Fall High Point Furniture Market. where I purchased the coffee table book.  I  have enjoying reading the book and seeing the chateau’s transformation through Timothy’s words and eyes.

Add Color with Slipcovers

Hello and Happy New Year Everyone!  Cheryl Hucks, your Design Interpreter  with fabulous news for my family–I now have two new grandchildren!  Boy and girl twins were welcomed into my family two weeks ago!  I stayed 11 days over Christmas with my family to help take care of the precious angels.  With not a minute to spare, I stayed off social media and did not have time to write my blog.  I am very blessed with 4 grandsons and 2 granddaughters.

Back to work now!  Today’s blog is Adding Color with Slipcovers.  If you  get bored with the same home decor color, then slipcovers is one way you can change out your room’s color scheme as often as you like.  It much easier to make or have slipcovers made if your furniture has straight lines.  I prefer slipcovers and furniture in general that do not have skirts.  Allow your sofa and chairs to be “sexy” and show a  little leg! Plus, it is easier to vacuum under with no skirts and spiders are less likely to make your furniture their home.

Veranda Magazine

Veranda Magazine

I love this bright periwinkle color on this Veranda Magazine cover!!! It makes me happy and want to spend time in this room.  The sofa and stool are a neutral color that can be used with any color.  The slip covered chairs are straight lined.  Most everyone knows pillows  provide great pops of color.  Good quality made slipcovers will cost about the same as having a chair or sofa recovered.  My favorite slipcover fabric is Sunbrella or other “all-weather fade resistant ” fabric.  These fabrics resist stains, can be spot washed or laundered in your washing machine. Hang to dry!!!!  No dryers!!

Wouldn’t lavender or periwinkle linens, china and candles energize this gorgeous dining room?

Have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2015!

2015 Home Decor Trends: Part 2-Laundry Rooms

Hello Everyone!  Cheryl Hucks, the DESIGN INTERPRETER, with part 2 of my series on 2015 Home Decor Trends: LAUNDRY ROOMS.  With my appearance this week on Fox WGHP about Laundry Rooms, I wanted to blog  about this room where most women and men (yes, there are lots of men who do laundry) hate to spend time.  The trend in laundry rooms is to make them fun, funky and  bright but at the same time functional for your family’s needs.

Fox 8-WGHP

Fox 8-WGHP

I love appearing on Fox 8!  I am usually interviewed by Cindi Farmer and Julie Grant who are two of the nicest ladies!  They make it very easy to appear on live TV.  All of the laundry rooms ideas were purchased at Hobby Lobby.

Fox 8-Cheryl Hucks

Everyone has Lost Socks!  One of my friends has two huge boxes of socks–one whites and one darks! What a great idea to hang your extra socks in plain sight.  The easiest  and cheapest way to add color to your laundry room is with paint.  Pick a color you love and makes you happy.  Laundry rooms are one of the few rooms in your home I say go wild and do not worry about  continuing your color palette. Sherwin Williams  Sassy Green and Quiet Coral are two fun bright color that will definitely brighten a drab day of  laundry!  Are you not bold enough for bright walls?  Try a neutral gray and add bright accessories.  I like Benjamin Moore’s Marine Gray, a true gray that goes with any accent color.

Fox 8-Cheryl Hucks

Fox 8-Cheryl Hucks

Large fabric boxes and laundry totes can be found in many stores-Target, Walmart, Home Depot and more.  Doesn’t this black and white chevron create a happy, snappy feeling?  Plastic laundry baskets are sooooo old fashioned!  See those black wooden letters in the chevron box? Spell out special words to your family and hang them on the wall.  Family, Love, Fun and  Hope are a few of my favorites.

Fox 8-Cheryl Hucks

Fox 8-Cheryl Hucks

Humorous laundry roon signs will give you a chuckle!  Organize laundry products in glass jars and add black chalkboard labels.  I purchased the aqua planter in the Hobby Lobby  floral department.  The chalkboard label was included.  I love trays of any kind!  If you lack cabinet space or like  your laundry supplies sitting on the counter or on top of the dryer, purchase a snappy tray or DIY and paint one.

Fox 8-Cheryl Hucks

Need reminders of upcoming family events? Hang a chalkboard in your laundry room.  Your kids will have no excuses to miss football practices, dinner with Grandmother or a dreaded doctors appointment.  Add decal stripes, scrolls, phrases to your walls.  You will need an extra set of hands for installation.

This past September I designed the Laundry Room and Drop Zone  for Chic Chateau Charity Designer Showcase House that benefited ARC of Greensboro, NC. We were given a color palette that all rooms had to use.  I was lucky enough the builder agreed to paint the laundry room walls Quiet Coral by Sherwin Williams. Quiet Coral is not very quiet!  Busy families need organization and laundry rooms and drop zones (walk through from garage to kitchen) are the logical places to organize your family. This was inexpensive and easy to install.  Coat hooks for book bags, file folder holders for homework and dry erase boards for reminders for each child.  I added a dry erase calendar for family events to be in one central location. The bulletin board can hold birthday invitations and more.

To conceal the ugly gray circuit breaker box I custom made this sexy wall hang.  Easy! Easy! I made a “pillow case “, turned it right side out, added chevron for trim and spelled out my sexy saying with thin wooden letters that I had painted green.  I used E6000 glue to apply letters. Be sure to add a pocket for the drapery rod in the top.  When you need to open the circuit box door , simply remove the wall hang.

Love this fun chandelier that was donated by Debbie Huffman, owner of  Dolce Domira, a fine linen shop in Greensboro, NC.  I hand painted it in our  color palette and added black and white striped shades. This would also look fab in a nursery or little girl’s bedroom.

The showcase house did not include a washer and dryer during the two weekend event.  Mid-Century Modern was our design style.  I was lucky to find this vintage mid century modern credenza that I painted black and added zebra stripe cabinet knobs. Love the zebra stripe rug!  Think I am crazy to put a rug in a laundry room?  Think again!  The new outdoor rugs are inexpensive and great for a wet area. See the cute black and white accessories?

Chic Chateau Laundry Room designed by Cheryl Hucks

Don’t you love the original artwork by the ARC children? The colors are bold and bright.  Hey! You could use your own children’s art.  They would love it! I also added a wipe off laminated apron in my accessory black and white.  Convenient when adding clorox to to your washer. Need to organize more?  Label fabric boxes and display on open shelves, in cabinets or what I did, a purchased organizer.

Chic Chateau Drop Zone designed by Cheryl Hucks

Janelle Robinson is a very talented local artist, who is an expert at working with barn doors.  Her work is amazing!!  She made the sign “The dirt stops here” for the drop zone.  I also love this fun, contemporary pillow fabric.  Doesn’t make this drop zone fun, inviting and more comfortable for your growing kids with short legs?  The darling sunflowers were made by ARC kids in workshops. Give you any ideas for your kids art?  How about a shelf to display their artist side.

I hope my appearance on Fox 8 and my fun laundry room and drop zone I designed for Chic Chateau Charity Designer Showcase House has inspired you to make a dreary laundry room fun!  It does no require a lot of money, just your imagination!

“2015 Home Decor Trends” Part 1-Color

Hello Everyone! Cheryl Hucks, your DESIGN INTERPRETER, is back from helping decorate my future twin grandchildren’s nursery.   We do not know whether there will two adorable girls or boys or one of each but the suspense will be over in December!  Once we know the sexes, we will add the their names above their cribs and other finishing touches. We framed and matted colorful artwork by the twin’s 10 and 12 yr old  brothers to create a beautiful art wall. I am so excited to welcome my 5th and 6th grandchildren!!

Are you ready to update your home with the  2015  Home Decor Trends”?  Rather than list all the trends in one long blog, I have decided to write a series based on several of the new trends for 2015.  Today’s blog is about “color” which is probably the number one requested trend for any new year. After the Spring High Point Furniture Market I wrote that one of seminars I attended said blue would be one of the hottest color for 2015.  There are many organizations and individuals who give an “educated guess” as to what the new color or group of  colors will be for the following year. Sometimes they all agree but sometimes not.  Pantone  releases their “Color for 2015” in December.  Furniture and accessory  manufacturers must make those “educated guesses” earlier or their products would not be in the stores  or on websites by 2015. Most major paint companies have already made their predictions for 2015.  Benjamin Moore is the only one that has a 2015 Color of the Year.  Sherwin Williams and  Behr have “color palettes”.

Benjamin Moore's "Guilford Green" HC-116

Country Living Magazine-Benjamin Moore’s “Guilford Green” HC-116

“Benjamin Moore has made its big announcement: The company’s 2015 Color of the Year is Guilford Green (HC-116), which creative director Ellen O’Neill calls “a neutral that’s natural.” The silvery shade of green is the centerpiece of Benjamin Moore’s color trend story for 2015, a palette of 23 shades of green, blue, blush and berry designed to mixed and matched.   We chose Guilford Green as our 2015 Color of the Year because it can be the hero or the highlight in any room, enhancing the architectural identity of a space,” O’Neill said in a press release. “Guilford Green is the perfect thread to connect nature, spaces, and interiors with color schemes that signify fresh energy and growth.”

Back in the 90s I used a similar shade of green by Benjamin Moore for several projects.  Every color in my color scheme looked fabulous with the silvery green.  Why? Because the most predominant colors in nature –green, turquoise, blue and yellow- compliment the less occurring colors.

Small Spaces with Candice Olson furniture

Hi Everyone!  Your DESIGNER INTERPRETER, Cheryl Hucks, is back from the High Point Furniture Market and from working on a fun, exciting design project.  I cannot wait to show you pics of my design adventure!

While at the High Point Furniture Market I saw so many beautiful showrooms!! When visiting the market I take photos that help me interpret why designers use certain metals, furniture and accessories.

You  probably already know the new metal finish goes by the name  soft gold  or brushed gold or antique brass.  It is everyone –even in fashion.  You may have recently purchased  a new necklace with a gold metallic finish or a dress or handbag that is embellished with gold metal.   When Brushed nickel was first introduced as the latest and greatest metal finish, I still used my gold and brass. Shiny brass was popular in the 8Os and it now creeping back into home furnishings. Do not freak out–brushed nickel and polished nickel are still popular. As well as, oiled bronze.

Candice Olson, Highland House Furniture

Candice Olson, Highland House Furniture

Candice Olson’s Highland House Furniture console has an antique brass nail head trim that is ageless! It is paired with a more sleek no fuss shape and the latest neutral, gray.  The dark wooden top adds the perfect amount of warmth.  Enough about the console table. Let’s talk about the fabulous accessories!  What is your favorite?  The large round “soft gold” trimmed mirror or the pair of candlestick lamps?  I cannot decide!  I will take all three!  To complete the symmetry a pair of mini ottomans were added under the table.  Here you have a perfect example of a Small Space with Big  Design! Wouldn’t this be magnificent on that small wall in the corner that you cannot decide what furniture to use?  Maybe in a foyer or niche.  Do you have the perfect location for this Candice Olson console table? http://www.candiceolson.com/

Moore Councill’s Cary Chest

Hi Everyone!

It’s Cheryl Hucks your “Design Interpreter” bringing you info and pics about the fabulous Cary Chest by Moore Councill.

http://www.moorecouncill.com/

Moore Council's Cary Chest

Moore Councill’s Cary Chest

The Cary Chest was designed for the true gentleman at heart. It has everything a man would need to store any accesory he desired. Much like the Cary Grant’s signature red handkerchief, the inside of the chest is a royal red and the hardware even matches Cary’s cuff links. The upholstery on the chest was created to model Cary’s famed pinstriped suits.

A true gentleman’s chest based off of a true gentleman. Moore Councill has captured the essence of Cary Grant in this piece.

This smartly organized chest is perfect for a female too!  I already know what I place in each spot..even the tiny ones.  I would also love, love one in a home office! With 49″ wide/ 42″ tall/ 23″ deep  office supplies will get organized in a flash!
